Silence.
Vadivel has listened to the incomprehensible English and tries to translate it through the expression on my face.
Silence. No words possible. Vadivel rises from the incomprehension that enfolds us all.
He describes how he gathered his sonâs bones and took them in a jute bag back to the public cemetery for reburial. After that, he was called in for questioning and asked to go to the fourth floor of the CID in Colombo.
He didnât want to go there, his lawyer advised against it, so the NPC co-ordinator advised him to write a letter saying he couldnât travel to Colombo but could make it to Kalmunai. He was interrogated at Kalmunai from morning till evening about his sonâs death.
âI canât remember the questions properly. I canât remember my answers. Finally, they asked if I knew who shot my son. I said âIf I knew who did this, would I spend so much time and go through all these procedures? This is why I have taken the case to you!ââ
Vadivel stops, looks drained and reflects: âI have taken my sonâs case to the UN Human Rights Commission, the highest place, and this has been reported in all the papers. I have not received even 10 rupees compensation from the government. And people were against me taking this case on. They feared that something else would happen in the family if we proceeded with the case. But I told them that as long as I live I will not remain silent. I donât mind laying down my life to see justice done.â
